Depew Public Works Authority receives $32,718 Emergency Grant for Water System Improvements

The Depew Public Works Authority (Authority) in Creek County received approval for a $32,718 Emergency Grant Tuesday through the Oklahoma Water Resources Board (OWRB) to improve the Authority’s water infrastructure.
The Authority owns and operates a water distribution system that serves a population of approximately 476 individuals.   The system’s drinking water is provided by three groundwater wells.   One of the three wells is out of service due to downhole casing failure.   The system has not been able to keep up with the demand due to their largest drinking water well being out of commission.

To resolve the issue, the Authority is proposing to drill and complete a new offset well next to the existing well that is currently out of service and construct a well house.  The project is estimated to cost $38,492 of which $32,718 will be funded by the OWRB’s Emergency Grant Program and the remaining $5,774 will be provide by the Authority in local funds. Attending the OWRB’s monthly meeting in support of the emergency application was the acting Mayor of Depew, Randy Campbell.

Joe Freeman, chief of the OWRB's Financial Assistance Division, calculated that the grant will save the Authority’s customers $69,286 in principal and interest charges, by not having to borrow the project funds. Since 1983 the Water Resources Board has approved over $3.4 billion in loans and grants for water and wastewater infrastructure improvements throughout Oklahoma.

“We are grateful to Senators Brian Bingman and Jason Smalley and Representative James Leewright for their continued support of water and wastewater infrastructure funding in Oklahoma,” said J.D. Strong, OWRB Executive Director.
