Abstract:

This dataset is a subset of the Reported Wells of Oklahoma dataset. It shows only the wells that have a [WORK_TYPE] of [Groundwater Well].
The well locations depicted in this GIS dataset are those recorded on the Multi-Purpose Well Completion Reports filed by licensed well drillers for each new well constructed. The well locations are usually described to a quarter, quarter, quarter of a section (ten-acre tract); however, older well completion reports did not require the driller to provide as complete a description and those locations may describe a 640, 160 or 40 acre tract. A latitude/longitude coordinate was derived for the legal description by using a conversion program called "Okie-Loc" developed by Geo Information Systems at the University of Oklahoma. This conversion program provides the center of the described tract as the location for the well even though the well may actually be located any place within the tract. Most locations have not been field verified; however, in a few cases, the coordinates of the well location were determined by using a global positioning system (GPS), which would provide a more accurate point location. The dataset is updated monthly.
NOTE: The wells in the Arbuckle-Simpson study area were selected from the statewide dataset and saved as a dataset.

The well locations were derived from different methods. 1) A conversion program, which converts a legal description into a latitude/longitude coordinate. The legal description of each location is described to the center of a 10, 40, 160 or 640 acre tract. Each lat/lon point describes the center of that tract. 2) A well location can be defined using a Global Positioning System device. The method used to calculate each well location is described in the "LL_METHOD" field of the shape file.

Completeness_Report:

This enclosed information is the result of researching all multi-purpose completion reports and well locations listed in the Oklahoma Water Resources Board files. The multi-purpose completion report database consists of information submitted to the Board for all well data reported by licensed firms since 1982 and monitoring well data reported since 1988.
The well descriptions provided do not represent all water wells completed within the area of the search. Wells drilled before the licensing and reporting requirements for water well drillers are exempt from reporting. Wells are occasionally drilled by unlicensed firms or by individual landowners and not reported are not included in the database. For a complete inventory of water wells a visual search of the lands of interest should be done to supplement this well record search.
The Oklahoma Water Resources Board does not guarantee the accuracy of the data listed on the multi-purpose well completion form. Data entered into the database is taken directly from the form and is as reported by the well drillers and many of the forms have not been field verified for accuracy. If any errors in the records are discovered, please bring them to our attention so that corrections to the database may be made.

For the computer calculate latitude and longitude locations, the location of each well is within a 10, 40, 160 or 640 acre area of land. These could be anywhere inside the described area.
