U.S. Geological Survey Flood-prone Area Maps for Oklahoma, which include 100-year floodplain delineations, were created in the early 1970s and 80s prior to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) or Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood map development. Through a cooperative project with FEMA (funded in part through FEMA CAP-SSSE 2009 funds), the OWRB has scanned these maps and made them available to the public for download. Also available below are Soil Survey Maps that show frequently flooded and occasionally flooded soils for Kiowa, Greer and Washita Counties as well as additional preliminary maps, developed by Michael Baker Jr., for Custer, Murray, Texas, and Tillman Counties.
While the maps include the best flood data available at the time of their creation, they should be considered preliminary until FEMA supersedes delineations with more current, official flood maps. To learn if a new map is available for a particular area, visit FEMA's Map Service Center at www.fema.gov.
Newly Updated Flood Maps
Several counties have newly updated flood maps. Oklahoma homeowners, business and residential renters, and business owners who do not have flood insurance are encouraged to buy coverage now to get the best possible premiums before new flood insurance rate maps go into effect.
